<p>In today&#8217;s highly competitive business landscape, Australian small businesses are constantly seeking ways to reduce costs without compromising their workforce or quality of service or product.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Many small businesses overlook or are unaware of the importing options to help reduce costs.&nbsp;&nbsp;There&#8217;s a misconception that small businesses shouldn&#8217;t or couldn&#8217;t import their goods. But that&#8217;s simply not true, small businesses need to think outside the box and be competitive with their prices without compromising on quality.&nbsp;</p>



<p>It&#8217;s possible for some small businesses to save up to 50 per cent on their stock by importing some of your goods. </p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The power of importing goods</strong></h4>



<p>By sourcing products from international suppliers, businesses can take advantage of lower production and labour costs in other countries, resulting in substantial savings. This allows small-business owners to maintain their workforce while simultaneously increasing their competitive edge, and really focus on things that matter on the ground.&nbsp;</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Finding the right vendors</strong></h4>



<p>Finding reliable and trustworthy vendors abroad can be intimidating but it can be done with the right steps in place. The first step is to do your research and due diligence.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Conduct thorough research on potential vendors and suppliers. Look for credible trade directories, attend trade shows, and leverage online platforms to identify reputable companies that align with your business needs.</p>



<p>Investigate and evaluate your options. Request product samples from potential vendors to ensure their goods meet your standards. It’s also important to conduct quality checks to ascertain their adherence to regulatory requirements, certifications, and industry standards.</p>



<p>Communication is key! It&#8217;s imperative to establish effective lines of communication with potential vendors. Clear communication is essential to build trust, negotiate favourable terms, and address any concerns or queries promptly. <p>Visit the supplier if you can. Whenever possible, plan visits to meet potential vendors in person. This allows you to assess their facilities, production processes, and build stronger relationships, leading to more favourable terms and conditions. If it&#8217;s impossible to visit then set up a virtual (Zoom) interview, ask for virtual walkthroughs if possible. </p>

<p>If venturing into international imports seems too intimidating, it doesn’t mean there aren&#8217;t other ways to reduce costs. </p>



<p>Look at ways you can make your supply chain leaner like seeing where you can reduce waste or optimise your process like how much packaging you use for each item. Work closely with vendors, optimising inventory levels, and improving logistics efficiency.</p>



<p>Invest in technology that can provide data analytics or digital tools to streamline operations, improve productivity, and reduce costs. By leveraging technology, businesses can achieve higher efficiency levels while maintaining staff levels.</p>



<p>Revise your contracts with vendors and find ways to strengthen your relationships with them. Don&#8217;t be afraid to negotiate more favourable terms like extended payment periods, volume discounts, or price guarantees. Building long-term partnerships can lead to mutually beneficial agreements and cost savings.</p>



<p>Lastly, consider outsourcing non-core activities such as IT support, accounting, or customer service to specialised service providers. This can help small businesses better focus on their important moments while reducing overhead costs.</p>



<p>As a small business, don&#8217;t limit yourself. It’s important to explore and experiment on ways to save on costs. Exploring the world of importing goods is just one way. </p>

<p>But one most overlooked tactic that can expand a small business is leveraging B2B partnerships. It can be a budget-friendly option that can significantly grow your business.</p>



<p>Here are a few ways small businesses can begin exploring and implementing B2B partnerships no matter their budget or size.</p>

<p>Australia is a small business nation as 97 per cent of all Australian businesses are considered small to medium enterprises. These past few years haven’t been kind to small businesses. But despite the hard times, it was having a resilience strategy that helped my business, Fantastic Framing, grow by 70 per cent YOY and build my rapport with my clients and overall client base.</p>



<p>The resilience a business shows has been the defining factor between those that succeed and those that fail. But resilience looks different for every business and every business owner.</p>



<p>Whether it is pivoting your business – as most businesses did during the pandemic – or sourcing funding, all of these barriers come with risk and long working hours with no promise of reward.</p>



<p>Here are a few ways small-business owners can build up their resilience to benefit their business.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Be tuned in and lean into agility</strong></h4>



<p>Your superpower is your ability to adapt and innovate quickly. When setbacks arise unexpectedly, don&#8217;t let it hold you down because due to your nimble nature, you can quickly shift your priorities as long as you&#8217;re tuned into the happenings in your business.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Creating an accountability culture</strong></h4>



<p>It&#8217;s important to encourage behaviours that cultivate an &#8220;accountability&#8221; culture. Talking about being resilient and actually doing it are two different things. For instance, talking openly with your team about what keeps them motivated, in-tuned, and accountable creates transparency and breads open communication. All important ingredients to a resilient team.</p>

<p>Being resilient isn&#8217;t equal to perseverance. To keep your business innovating, small businesses need to be centered in their vision so when things aren&#8217;t working they can accept the learning lesson, digest it and have the courage to deep dive into the problem to find the solution. The key is to focus on the things you can change versus focusing on the things you can&#8217;t.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Prioritise a work-life balance</strong></h4>



<p>As a small-business owner, your budgets and limitations are lean therefore you&#8217;re probably wearing many hats. An engine can&#8217;t run on empty fumes just as a business can&#8217;t run on a run-down business owner. Burnout is one of the top killers for a business. Having a small business allows you the flexibility to build that into your schedule. Having rest allows you to see the business with fresh eyes and keeps you sharp and creative.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Create monthly benchmarks or goals and check in with them regularly</strong></h4>



<p>Building monthly KPI benchmarks creates structure to your operation and generates measurable outcomes. Checking in on them at the end or beginning of the month provides you clariety on your business priorities, accomplishments,  or ways of optimisation you can bring forward into your next month. It helps mitigate misinformation and keeps you moving forward.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Keep tight to your margins</strong></h4>



<p>As a small business, you&#8217;re probably already running on lean margins therefore it&#8217;s imperative to stick to them and check on them regularly. The discipline of maintaining them will be a key success factor. Build a financial reserve or alternatively ensure you have credit to lean on during periods of low cashflow. Secondly, time is money for a small business. If possible, get support where you can so you can focus on things only you can focus on.</p>
