According to EnergyLab, the chosen start-ups represent the best in innovative technologies across the energy sector and they were selected in consultation with energy industry partners.

“We’re supercharging the transition to a brighter energy future in partnership with Australia’s largest climate tech accelerator and innovation network, EnergyLab,” Endeavour Energy’s Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, Leanne Pickering, said. “This is our fourth year partnering with EnergyLab for the Scaleup Program to identify innovative late-stage start-ups to help us deliver new systems and technology for smarter, cleaner energy, today.”

In addition to offering start-ups the opportunity to meet, and collaborate with Australia and New Zealand’s innovative energy companies, the chosen start-ups will have an opportunity to network with some of Australia’s most active climate tech investors, relevant government organisations, and experts from EnergyLab’s 400-strong mentor network.

EnergyLab’s CEO Megan Fisher said that EnergyLab’s Scaleup Program is bridging the gap between global startups and Australian energy companies.

“The Scaleup Program helps to connect startups working on breakthrough energy technologies from anywhere in the world with Aussie energy companies and supports them to explore pilots and partnerships opportunities” Fisher said. “This not only helps startups to unlock their next wave of commercial opportunities, but also helps industry partners explore emerging tech to decarbonise the grid.”

The Energy Scaleup Program will run over the next three months culminating with a virtual public showcase to be held on 7 Oct. Expressions of interest from start-ups for the 2025 cohort are now open on the program website.

Carbon management start-up Avarni has raised $3 million in funding to fuel its work in helping consultancies and enterprise companies across the globe understand, report, and forecast their carbon emissions.

This is Avarni’s second fundraising campaign since its founding in 2021 and was led by deep tech venture firm Main Sequence, along with existing investors Vulpes Ventures and Common Sense Ventures.

Avarni has garnered attention for having developed a platform that speeds up the process of assessing, planning and monitoring carbon emissions across an organisation and its supply chain while allowing them to also forecast different decarbonisation scenarios. The platform is seen to have helped businesses set scientific-based net-zero targets, and report on carbon emissions aligned with international standards set by the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

Avarni has secured deals with major consulting firms such as KPMG Australia, as well as other major global enterprises such as Point B and 5B in expanding their decarbonisation solution sets. It is also a technology partner at the McKinsey Digital Capability Center, part of McKinsey & Company’s global Digital Capability Center Network.

“Since our launch roughly a year ago, we have made huge strides in Australia and globally to help companies continue to progress their decarbonisation journey, and use our AI-backed platform to allow businesses to access their Scope 3 emissions quickly, effectively and without the burden of significant cost,” co-founder and CEO of Avarni Tony Yammine said. “Climate risk is one of the biggest concerns for executives, boards and shareholders today, and that’s not going away anytime soon. Now, we’re entering a new exciting phase, which will see us remain laser focused on providing extensive data sets and insights to become the go-to carbon management platform for companies and their advisors.”

Mike Zimmerman of Main Sequence, who will join the Avarni Board, said that despite the vast numbers of commitments to emissions targets, as well as the growing number of countries mandating disclosures, enterprises are struggling to understand, let alone manage, their Scope 3 emissions.

“Avarni’s traction with some of the world’s largest consultancies and their clients puts them in a great position to help us decarbonise the planet,” Zimmerman said.

Field Pickering, Managing Partner at Vulpes Ventures, said that what Avarni has achieved over the last year has been “phenomenal” and that they are on a strong trajectory despite a challenging economic environment.

“The team is rapidly building one of the biggest data sets available on corporate emissions,” Pickering said. “This is the intelligence businesses need to inform their decarbonisation strategies – and Avarni is at the forefront of rapidly collecting this information.”

The National Energy Resources Australia, (NERA) an independent, federal-funded, not-for-profit working to decarbonise Australia’s energy sector, has launched a nationwide pitch program to identify, support and raise the profile of the country’s top cleantech businesses that are developing world-class technologies that can help shape the global energy transition.

LETs Pitch Australia is a supply chain development program that is supporting the growth of low emissions technologies by providing SMEs with unique business development opportunities.

Winners of the LETs Pitch Australia program will be invited to travel to Pittsburgh in the United States and showcase their technology on the international stage at Global Clean Energy Action Forum from 21 to 23 September 2022.

Miranda Taylor, NERA Chief Executive Officer, says investment in technology combined with collaboration across governments, industries, R&D and innovators must be a top priority if we are to achieve the scale of decarbonisation needed to meet global emissions targets.

“We need to get to net-zero as fast as we can while recognising the world also needs access to decarbonised, reliable, and affordable energy that also meets the highest standards of environmental protection and safety,” Taylor said. “That demand is only likely to increase. It is, therefore, vital that we take action now to accelerate support for the technologies that can decarbonise our economies and address growing energy demands globally.

“LETs Pitch is about identifying the innovative businesses behind Australia’s leading low emissions technologies and supporting their growth in domestic and international markets,” Taylor added. “This could secure a two-fold opportunity to grow Australia’s economy by fast-tracking decarbonisation and diversifying into high-value technologies and advanced manufacturing.”

LETs Pitch is open to start-up or scale-up businesses with an innovative technology that will support Australia’s low carbon future in one of the targeted technology categories such as clean hydrogen and low emissions electricity.
