Why you should only work with clients that suit you – and how to target them

Woman taking notes about client

“How do I attract the right kind of client?” and “Why does it even matter?”

These are questions I get all the time – especially from women in business who feel burnt out, underpaid, or completely misunderstood by the people they’re meant to be serving.

Attracting aligned clients isn’t just about making more money. It’s about protecting your energy, enjoying your work, and building business sustainability through clients who come back again and again.

First of all: Who is the right client for you?

The right client will be different for everyone. Personally, I work best with people who are self-led, take responsibility, and value the space I hold.

When you’re working with the right clients, you’re not drained and you’re not doubting yourself. You’re actually doing the work you set out to do, and you’re being respected for it.

But when you’re calling in the wrong clients? It’s heavy. You end up over-explaining, undercharging, and wondering why you feel ‘off’ every time you open your laptop.

So if you’re in that space — I get it. For years, I built a business that looked good from the outside but was misaligned underneath. Why? Because I was speaking to everyone… and truly resonating with no one.

Let me explain how I flipped the script and got the right clients for me.

Strategy one: Nail your brand voice

Your brand voice (generally, this is your marketing copy) tells your customers who you are. And if this content sounds like it could’ve come from anyone, it won’t attract the clients you’re actually meant to work with.

Your brand voice isn’t just how you write. It’s your energy, your tone, your truth. It’s the feel behind your words that makes someone stop mid-scroll and go, “Shit. She’s speaking to me.”

Finding mine didn’t happen overnight. I had to drop the filters, stop writing like a coach, ditch the polished, professional version I thought I was supposed to be, and get really honest about who I’m here for.

It wasn’t as simple as asking myself a couple of reflection questions and magically having it all figured out. It took building emotional intelligence and showing up as who I actually am, rather than who I thought I needed to be.

Now my voice speaks straight to the women who are ready. The ones who want depth over the surface stuff, are done performing, and are craving honest, lasting growth.

So if your voice still feels vague or like you’re performing, it’s time to go deeper.

  • Who are you actually speaking to?
  • What do they need to hear that no one else is saying?
  • And how would you say it if you weren’t overthinking every word?

Say that. In your voice. In your words. And watch who starts paying attention.

Strategy two: Use your face, your story, your energy

This is what I call founder-led content.

People don’t just want to know what you sell – they want to know who you are.

They want to feel you. Trust you. See themselves in you.

I share stories from my real life: the messiness of step-parenting, the lessons from failing uni, the breakthroughs I’ve had through shadow work and trauma. I post the truth, not the polish.

And guess what?

That level of transparency attracts the right kind of client, the one who already knows what I stand for and how I show up.

Start here: Let people into your world. Tell the story behind the offer. Show them what working with you feels like before they ever pay you a cent.

Strategy three: Lead with value, not your pitch

I don’t push my products. Instead, I teach, speak, and share real tools and practical mindset shifts. I give my community value first.

Because when people learn from you for free and it genuinely shifts something inside them, they naturally want more. And that kind of connection attracts the right people. The ones who are already aligned with your work before they ever hit buy.

The women who were resonating with my content were the exact type of clients I wanted to work with. It wasn’t just a lead magnet, it was a filter.

Ask yourself, what does my ideal client need to hear, learn, or understand today that would genuinely help them shift, even if they never buy from me? Then give them that.

Strategy four: Stop chasing and start leading

Let me say this clearly: I don’t cold pitch. I don’t chase. I don’t try to “convince.”

And yet I have a full calendar, sold-out events, and a waitlist for my 1:1 mentorship.

Why?

Because I stay in alignment. I stay in integrity. I show up with value and trust the right people will feel it.

That shift alone changed everything.

Start here: Show up consistently in your power. Say what needs to be said. Let the energy of your leadership speak louder than any pitch ever could.

So, what does attracting the right client look like?

It’s not just about making sales; it’s about waking up excited to work with clients, feeling respected, and building a long-term business community. That’s what’s possible when you build your brand from the inside out.
